Dry trim vs. wet trim: which should you use?

Two trim philosophies, two different end products. Choose for your environment and your patience.

Wet trim happens immediately after chop, with leaves still turgid. Dry trim happens after the plant has hung for 7-10 days, with leaves brittle. Both work. Both have trade-offs. The right choice depends mostly on your drying environment and your willingness to do detailed work at different stages.

Wet trim — what it actually looks like

You chop the plant, immediately remove every fan leaf and sugar leaf, and hang the bare flowers to dry. The flowers dry exposed, faster, with less leaf surface area trapping moisture.

Wet trim advantages and disadvantages
Pros
  • Faster total time from chop to jar
  • Easier to trim turgid leaves cleanly
  • Better in high-humidity environments where slow drying invites mold
  • Cleaner-looking bag appeal
Cons
  • Faster dry can lead to harsher smoke
  • Less natural cure — flavor can be flatter
  • Trichome heads can be knocked off when leaves are turgid and resistant
  • All work has to happen on harvest day
