Lineage Basics

What lineage really means in cannabis

A clear-eyed read on parentage, pedigree, and why two packs of the same name aren't always the same plant.

Lineage is the documented record of a strain's parents, grandparents, and the breeding decisions that shaped the line. A name on a pack is marketing. A documented lineage is genetics.

Why lineage matters

  • It predicts how a plant will likely behave — vigor, structure, terpene direction.
  • It tells you whether you're buying a stable line or a one-off pollen chuck.
  • It lets growers swap notes meaningfully — "my GMO leans toward the Chemdog mother" only makes sense if the parents are known.
  • It protects buyers from rebranded gear sold under a different name.
Strong lineage vs. weak lineage
Strong (breeder-confirmed)
  • Both parents named and verifiable
  • Generation labelled (F1, F2, BX1, S1)
  • Direction of selection disclosed
  • Often supported by clone/cut history
Weak (vague)
  • "OG cross" with no specifics
  • Marketing name only — no parents listed
  • Generation unknown
  • No clarity on the mother / father side
Is reported lineage always wrong?+
Not at all. Reported lineage is the community consensus where breeder confirmation isn't available. It's still useful — but it should be flagged, not treated as fact.
What's 'disputed lineage'?+
Two or more credible breeders disagree on parentage. CannaForge surfaces both readings on the strain page rather than picking a winner.
