Pre-flower checklist: what to fix before the flip

Eighteen things to verify before switching to 12/12.

Flowering is unforgiving. Problems that were minor in veg become catastrophes in flower because the plant can't repair itself the same way. The 7-10 days before the flip are your last chance to fix issues cheaply. This is the checklist serious growers run before every flip.

Plant health

No active pests (check undersides of fan leaves with a 30× loupe).
No active disease — no white powder, no yellow spots, no fungal lesions.
Healthy uniform green leaves with no major deficiencies showing.
Strong stem and good branching structure.
No visible signs of stress (heat, light, salt buildup).

Training and canopy

Canopy is even — top branches and lower branches at the same height.
Last topping/fim done at least 10-14 days ago — fresh wounds heal before flip.
Any lollipopping (lower branch removal) done at least a week before flip.
LST ties checked, no constriction on growing stems.
Final plant height + projected stretch fits inside the tent's usable space.

pH and EC pens calibrated.
Runoff EC under 2.0 — flush if creeping higher.

Common pre-flower mistakes

Topping the day of the flip — plant heals while stretching, wasting energy.
Transplanting in the same week as the flip — double stress.
Adding new gear (light, fan) without dialing it in first — variables stack.
Skipping the dark-period check — light leaks cause hermaphroditism.

Should I defoliate before flip?+

Light defoliation (large fans shading bud sites) yes. Heavy defoliation no — every leaf you cut is energy lost during stretch.

Should I water more or less right before flip?+

Same rhythm. Drastic changes are stressors.

How long should I veg before flipping?+

Long enough that your canopy reaches the flip-height your genetics need. Not by calendar.
