Your plant doubles or triples in size after the flip. Here's how to plan for that.

In the first 2-3 weeks after flipping to 12/12, your plant stops vegging and starts flowering — but its first reaction is to grow tall, fast. This is the stretch. Internodes elongate, the plant reaches for light, and depending on the genetics, you'll see anywhere from a 50% to 300% height increase before flower production really takes over. Almost every beginner blows their first grow by not planning for this.

Why plants stretch

In nature, cannabis flowers in late summer when days shorten. The plant detects shortening light cycles and pushes a final burst of height to maximize seed dispersal. Modern indoor genetics retain this trait. The stretch isn't optional — you can only minimize it; you can't eliminate it.

How different genetics stretch

Indica-dominant (low stretch)

Kush family, Afghani lines, GSC hybrids
1.5-2× height in flower
Dense compact growth
Less training required

Sativa-dominant (high stretch)

Haze, Diesel, classic sativas
2.5-3.5× height in flower
Long internodes, airy growth
Heavy training needed indoors

Plan the flip by canopy height, not weeks

Don't flip on a calendar. Flip when the canopy is at the right height for the stretch your genetics will deliver. If your usable tent height (light → canopy distance you can maintain) is 4 feet, and you're growing a 3× stretcher, flip when the canopy is around 12-16 inches. Indica-leaning genetics with 1.5× stretch can flip at 22-26 inches.

Know your genetics' typical stretch ratio
Breeder pages, Lineage Atlas, or grow logs will tell you. Most fall between 1.5× and 3×.

Calculate your flip height
Final canopy height = usable tent height - 6" buffer. Flip height = final / stretch ratio.

Even the canopy before flip
All branches at the same height before flip = even bud production after stretch. Use LST or supercropping.

Stop training within 7 days of flip
Heavy training during stretch stresses the plant when it's most vulnerable.

Light height management through stretch

As the plant grows toward the light, raise the light to maintain a consistent distance. Most LED panels want 18-24 inches above the canopy in flower. HID lights need more clearance (24-36 inches) due to heat.

Check daily during weeks 1-3 of flower.
Use the back-of-hand test: if your hand is uncomfortable at canopy level for 30 seconds, the light is too close.
PAR meters tell you the true number — most LEDs at 24" deliver 800-1000 µmol/s/m² PPFD, which is the flower target.

Late-stretch training — small adjustments only

By week 2 of flower, the plant is committed. You can still tuck big fan leaves and use light LST to even the canopy, but no aggressive topping, fimming, or supercropping. Stress at this stage delays flower production and can trigger hermaphroditism.

If your plant stretches more than expected

Raise the light
If the plant gets within 12" of an LED panel, raise it. Light bleach is irreversible.

Use plant ties to bend the tops sideways
Spread the canopy instead of letting it cone-shape upward.

Supercrop carefully
Squish a main stem just below the top until it bends. Heals in 3-4 days. Only do this in week 1 of flower at the absolute latest.

Accept loss and prune
If a single cola is way too tall, cut it. Better one missing cola than a burned canopy.

Can I top during flower?+

No. Topping cuts the apex, which during flower stops bud production at that site permanently.

How long does stretch last?+

Most genetics finish stretching by week 3 of flower. After that, height stabilizes and bud production takes over.

My autoflower doesn't seem to stretch much — is that normal?+

Yes. Autoflowers stretch less because their flower trigger is built-in and doesn't require a dramatic photoperiod shift.
