Humidity by growth stage: seedling, veg, flower, and drying

Humidity isn't a static target. A cannabis plant's water demands shift dramatically across its life cycle — and so does the relative humidity (RH) you should be giving it. Get the staging wrong and you'll see slow growth in veg, mold in flower, and brittle harshness in cure. Get it right and the plant practically grows itself.

Why RH changes everything

Plants pull water up through their roots and release it through their leaves (transpiration). The drier the air around the leaf, the harder the plant works to move that water. The wetter the air, the less it has to move — but if the air is too wet, water condenses on leaves and bud surfaces, inviting mold.

Vapor pressure deficit (VPD) is the technical measure of this difference, but for practical purposes you can manage RH by stage and check VPD later if you want to dial in further.

Seedling stage — high humidity is medicine

A seedling has no root mass to speak of. It can't pull water effectively yet, so high humidity around the leaves keeps it from drying out faster than it can hydrate. This is why humidity domes work — they create a saturated micro-environment until the plant can self-regulate.

Use a humidity dome for the first 5-7 days. Vent it briefly daily.
Mist the inside of the dome, not the leaves.
Lift the dome gradually starting around day 10 — full removal by day 14.
If your room is below 50% RH, run a small humidifier near the seedlings.

Veg — the sweet spot

Mature veg plants want 55-65% RH with active air movement. The plant transpires hard, roots stretch fast, and growth is exponential. Most beginner problems in veg trace back to environmental humidity that's drifted outside this band — too low and the plant droops chronically; too high and you'll see slow growth, edema (bumps under leaves), and the early signs of fungal disease.

Early flower — the dangerous transition

When you flip to 12/12, your plant enters the stretch — internodes elongate, leaves expand, and the plant doubles in size. Many growers don't realize humidity needs to drop with the flip. Continuing 65% RH into flower is how powdery mildew outbreaks start.

Mid-late flower — mold prevention is the only thing that matters

By week 5-6 of flower, bud density makes the inside of the cola a tiny microenvironment of its own. Higher external RH means even higher RH inside the bud. Once internal bud RH crosses 60%, mold can develop — and the first time you catch it, you've already lost some of the plant.

Keep room RH at 45% by week 5
Run a dehumidifier if needed. Buy a real one — desiccant tubs don't move enough water.

Watch the daily RH swing
RH typically rises during dark hours. If your dark-period RH spikes above 55%, you need more airflow or a bigger dehumidifier.

Drop RH in the final 2 weeks
40-45% is the late-flower target. The plant won't suffer; it'll just finish cleaner.

Don't shock-drop RH
A sudden 30% jump or drop stresses the plant. Move 5% / day max.

Drying and curing — back up to medium

After harvest, you want a slow water release, not a flash dry. Drying space at 60% RH (60-65 °F) for 10-14 days is the sweet spot. If the buds dry too fast, you lock chlorophyll into the flower and end up with grassy harsh smoke. Too slow and you get mold.

Why do my buds smell hay-ish after dry?+

Dried too fast. Slow it down next time — lower temp and raise RH.

Can I trust the dehumidifier built into my AC?+

Sometimes. Most consumer AC dehumidifiers can't keep up with a full flower tent. Get a dedicated unit if you can.

What about VPD?+

VPD is the more precise measure that combines temp + RH. Most growers should manage RH and temp by stage and only dive into VPD if those ranges aren't producing results.
