Cannabis forums have argued about defoliation for decades. One camp swears by ruthless stripping to maximize light penetration; another insists leaves are the plant's energy factories and should be preserved. Both are partly right, and both can be wrong depending on context. Here's the version that holds up under actual results.

What leaves actually do

A leaf is a solar panel and a sugar factory. It captures photons, makes glucose through photosynthesis, and feeds the rest of the plant. A leaf in shade contributes almost nothing — it costs the plant water and respiration but produces little energy. A leaf in full light is a profit center.

The two defoliation windows

Pre-flip (last 2-3 days of veg)
Remove the largest fan leaves that are clearly shading bud sites. Do this before stretch makes things worse.

Mid-flower (week 3 and week 5)
Two light passes max. Remove only shade-makers. The plant should still look like it has plenty of leaves after.

The 'Schwazz' / heavy defoliation school

Some commercial growers swear by extreme defoliation — removing 75-90% of leaves at specific points. This works for some commercial operations because they're growing single clone-only cuts in identical conditions and have refined the technique over hundreds of runs. For a home grower running 1-3 plants of different genetics, this approach is high-risk and high-loss.

Why timing matters more than amount

During stretch, the plant is restructuring itself — pushing energy into vertical growth. Removing leaves at this stage forces the plant to prioritize replacing them over building flower architecture. By contrast, defoliation in week 3-5 catches the plant after stretch is finished and lets it redirect energy into the buds you've revealed.

Week 1-2 of flower: don't defoliate.
Week 3-4: first light defoliation. Big fans only.
Week 5-6: second light defoliation. Same rule.
Week 7+: hands off. Plant is in finish mode.

Reading what to remove

Big fan leaves draping over bud sites — yes.
Lower-canopy leaves stuck in deep shade — yes if they're not contributing.
Mid-canopy leaves that intercept significant light — no, they're feeding buds.
Sugar leaves on the buds themselves — no, except a light final trim near harvest.

Common mistakes

Stripping leaves during stretch.
Defoliating a stressed plant — adds insult to injury.
Removing healthy mid-canopy leaves because a YouTube video said to.
Skipping defoliation entirely and ending up with dense humid pockets that mold.

Will defoliation increase my yield?+

Done correctly, light defoliation in flower can increase yield 5-10% by improving light distribution. Done wrong, it costs 10-20%.

Should I defoliate autoflowers?+

Even more conservatively. Autos have short cycles and can't recover lost leaves like photoperiods can.

What about pruning sugar leaves before harvest?+

A light trim of frosted sugar leaves makes wet trimming easier later. Don't strip them off during flower.
