Even canopies grow more weed. Here's how to build one and keep it.

Every grow room has the same constraint: light. Whatever PAR your light is delivering at canopy height is the energy budget for your plants. If half your canopy is at the optimal distance and half is 8 inches below, you've effectively cut your grow in half. Canopy management is the discipline of using every square inch of usable light.

What 'even' actually means

An even canopy is one where every flowering tip is within ±2 inches of the others. Each cola receives near-identical light, ventilation, and nutrition. The result is uniform bud development across the whole plant — instead of one fat top cola and a dozen popcorn lowers.

Three techniques, three approaches

How growers build even canopies

Low-stress training (LST)

Tie down main stems horizontally
Forces side branches up to the same height
Works for 1-3 plants per tent
Minimal stress on the plant

SCROG (screen of green)

Net stretched horizontally above the canopy
Weave growing tips through the net
Maximum light distribution per plant
Best for long-veg single-plant grows

LST timeline for even canopy

Week 2-3 of veg: bend the main
Tie the main stem 90° to the pot edge. Side branches respond by growing upward.

Week 3-5: equalize
As side branches grow, tie down the taller ones. Keep all branch tops at the same height.

Week 5-6: light defoliation
Remove only the largest fan leaves shading bud sites. Don't strip the plant.

Right before flip: final tuck
Tuck any remaining shading leaves under or around bud sites. Don't tie anything new in flower.

Maintaining canopy during flower

After flip and through stretch, you can still gently tuck or supercrop in week 1 of flower. After that, anything you do is mostly observational. Watch for tall outliers, single colas reaching too close to the light, and shade pockets developing as flower density increases.

Mid-flower defoliation: only if you have a clear shade problem. Two light defoliation events (~week 3 and week 5) are common.
Bud-site pruning: not the same as defoliation. Sometimes you remove a whole popcorn branch that won't develop properly.
Light height: adjust weekly during stretch, then settle in once height stabilizes around week 3.
Plant rotation: rotate the pot 90° every few days so all sides see the light if your light isn't uniform.

Lollipopping — when to do it and when not to

Lollipopping is removing all lower branches and growth below the main bud sites — leaving the plant looking like a lollipop. The theory: lower growth produces small airy popcorn buds that aren't worth the energy. The practice: it's overdone. Many growers lollipop too aggressively and lose 15-20% of their potential yield.

Common mistakes

Building an even canopy then not maintaining it through stretch — you watch it un-even itself.
Heavy defoliation during flower — the plant uses leaves to feed buds.
Lollipopping too aggressively — you can't put energy back.
Flipping to flower with an uneven canopy and hoping stretch will sort it out.

Is SCROG worth it for one plant?+

Yes — SCROG one plant in a 4×4 tent and you can fill the entire light footprint.

Do I need to defoliate at all?+

Lightly, in flower, yes. Heavy defoliation is overrated and often hurts more than it helps.

What if my canopy is uneven mid-flower?+

Tuck big fan leaves to even light distribution. Don't try to bend stems — they'll snap.
