Choosing pot size: seedlings, veg, flower, and outdoor

Why stepping up matters

Each transplant triggers a new root growth burst as the roots explore the fresh medium. By stepping up — solo → 1 gal → 3 gal → final — you maximize root development at each stage. A seedling dropped directly into a 5-gallon pot will struggle: most of the soil sits wet, oxygen drops in the unrooted zone, and root rot becomes likely.

   Start small

   Solo cup or 1-gallon for the first 2 weeks. Quick dryback teaches you watering rhythm.

   Step at first sign of root reaching the bottom

   Tip the pot, slide the root ball out, check the bottom for white roots. If you see them, it's time.

   Use fabric pots above 3 gallons

   Air pruning prevents circling roots. Plastic pots above 3 gal lead to root-bound plants faster.

   Don't transplant within 7 days of flip

   Double stress. Wait until plant is settled before changing pot size.

Outdoor pot size

Outdoor plants are constrained by your soil amendment and water access, not by tent height. A 25-gallon fabric pot fits a typical home outdoor plant. Move to 50-100 gallons if you want bigger plants and have the budget. Direct-in-ground works if your soil is good and you can amend; otherwise, fabric pots win.

• Outdoor 25 gal — typical home plant, 4-7 ft.
• Outdoor 50 gal — large season plant, 6-10 ft.
• Outdoor 100 gal — full-season tree, 8-12 ft.
• In-ground — depends entirely on your soil. Amend a 4×4×3 ft hole.
