Root zone health: how roots tell you what the plant needs

By the time a deficiency shows up in your leaves, the root zone has been struggling for days or weeks. Roots are the early warning system — they tell you about oxygen levels, pot size, salt accumulation, water rhythm, and disease pressure before any of those show up topside. Most experienced growers spend more attention on the soil line and below than on the canopy.

Healthy roots — what you're looking for

White to pale cream colored — fresh growth tips are translucent.
Branching evenly through the medium, reaching the edges and corners of the pot.
Sweet earthy smell, not sour or rotten.
Fine root hairs visible on the surface of the root mass.
No visible green algae or mold on the soil surface (some white mycelium is fine in living soil).

Pot size and oxygen — the relationship beginners miss

Roots need oxygen as much as they need water. Every time you water, the water fills the air pockets in the soil, displacing oxygen. As the soil dries back, fresh air gets pulled in. This cycle — wet to dry, wet to dry — is what feeds roots oxygen. Skip the dryback (overwatering) and roots suffocate.

Choose pot size for the cycle, not the future
Bigger pots hold more water and dry slower. A seedling in a 5-gal pot will sit wet for a week. Start small and step up.

Step up gradually
Solo cup → 1 gal → 3 gal → 5+ gal. Each step roots out before the next.

Use fabric pots above 3 gal
Air pruning at the edges produces a denser root mass than plastic.

Lift the pot, don't trust the meter
A meter only reads the surface inches. Pot weight tells you what's happening 4 inches down.

The dryback signal

Dryback is the percentage of the pot's water weight that drains or transpires between waterings. Pro coco growers chase 25-50% dryback (drying back 25-50% before watering again). For soil growers, this translates to: pick up the pot when watered, pick it up again before watering — when it's noticeably lighter (but not bone dry), water again.

Root rot — the disease that punishes overwatering

Root rot is caused by oxygen-starved roots becoming hospitable to anaerobic pathogens (most commonly Pythium and Fusarium). Healthy white roots turn brown, become slimy, and the plant goes from healthy to dying in 5-10 days. By the time you smell sour rot, it's often too late.

Prevention: dryback cycles, fabric pots, healthy bacterial diversity in the soil.
Early treatment: H₂O₂ wash for hydro, beneficial bacteria (Hydroguard) for any medium, repot with fresh substrate.
Late treatment: take clones from upper growth and start over. Plants with full rot rarely recover.

Root binding — the silent killer

Root-bound plants stop growing topside, develop nutrient deficiencies that don't respond to feeding, and wilt within 2 hours of watering even when the soil is moist. The reason is simple: there's no soil left, only roots, and roots can't hold water for the plant.

Lift the pot — if you see roots circling visibly on the surface or out the bottom, you're root bound.

Transplant up at the first sign
Don't wait — root-bound plants have already lost vigor.

Trim the worst circling roots
If you're moving up a pot size, gently break apart the bottom of the root ball and trim any large circling roots before placing in the new pot.

Soil surface clues

Hard crusty surface — over-feeding nutrient salts crystallizing.
Greenish surface — algae from constant moisture + light hitting the surface.
Gnat larvae or springtails — overwet conditions for too long.
White fluffy growth — usually beneficial mycelium in living soil; trichoderma in coco. Not a threat.

Should I trim the roots when transplanting?+

Only if they're badly circling. Healthy roots in a fresh medium will adapt fine.

Why are my roots brown but the plant looks healthy?+

Some soil minerals (iron, organic tannins) tint roots brown. The test is smell — sour/rotten = bad, earthy = fine.

Can I overwater on purpose to flush?+

Flushing is overstated for soil/coco. If you need to wash salt buildup, do it once with 3× pot volume of pH-adjusted water — not as a routine.
