What cannabis genetics tests can and cannot tell you

A clear-eyed look at what DNA testing actually reveals about a cannabis plant.

Cannabis DNA testing has become a marketable service. Several companies will fingerprint your plant or pack and give you a report with various claims. Some of those claims are scientifically solid. Others are aspirational marketing dressed up in lab language. Knowing the difference matters before you spend money or make a buying decision based on a test.

What current testing can do well

Confirm two plants are or aren't genetically identical (clone confirmation, S1 vs. true cut testing).
Identify chromosomal sex (XX vs. XY) at the seedling stage — useful for breeders.
Confirm autoflower (ruderalis) gene presence or absence.
Show genetic distance — how related two unknown plants are.
Detect known THCV / specific cannabinoid synthase genes when targeted markers exist.

These tests have real value. Clone authentication alone has saved collectors thousands of dollars on misidentified "Forum Cut" or "Headband" claims.

What current testing cannot reliably do

Tell you the exact parents of an unknown plant. Cannabis pedigree DNA databases are not comprehensive enough.
Predict terpene profile or potency from genotype.
Identify a strain by name without prior fingerprint records.
Distinguish two phenotypes of the same strain.
Replace breeder records or grow-out observation.

How DNA fingerprinting actually works

Most cannabis DNA tests use microsatellite markers (SSR) or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP). The lab compares your sample's marker pattern to a reference panel. Two plants with identical markers are highly likely to be the same genetic individual. Two plants with similar but not identical patterns are related but distinct.

"Will this plant make terpenes I like?" — too many environmental variables.
"What's the THC ceiling?" — environment dominates.
"Is this lineage X correct?" — limited pedigree database.

Cost and accessibility

Identity confirmation: $50-150 per sample at most reputable labs.
Sex testing: $25-75 per sample.
Full marker panel: $150-400 per sample.
Repeat tests for verification: usually discounted.

Common misconceptions

"DNA proves the lineage" — only if there's a credible reference for both parents.
"Lab results are objective" — labs use different marker panels and reference sets. Two labs can give different relatedness scores.
"This test replaces breeder records" — it supplements, never replaces.
"More markers = more accurate" — beyond a point, more data doesn't change the answer.

Should I test my keeper before breeding with her?+

If you're investing months in a breeding project — yes. Clone confirmation prevents disaster.

Can DNA testing tell me a strain is 'fake'?+

It can confirm a plant is or isn't the same as a known reference. Without a reference, it can only tell you relative genetic distance.

Is at-home DNA testing useful?+

Currently no — at-home tests aren't well-developed for cannabis. Mail-in lab tests are the practical option.
