Stabilized line vs. clone-only cut vs. seed reproduction

Three different ways the same strain can exist. Each behaves differently in your garden.

The same strain name can exist in three fundamentally different forms: as a stabilized seed line, as a single clone-only cut, or as a seed reproduction (S1, F2, or BX) of a clone. All three are 'real' versions of the strain — but they grow differently, look differently, and serve different purposes.

Stabilized line — many plants, similar expression

A stabilized line is the result of multiple generations of selection. Seeds from a stable line produce plants that resemble each other closely — phenotype variation is minimized, key traits (terpene profile, structure, finish time) are predictable.

  • Generations: F3 / F4 / F5 or higher.
  • Selection: deliberate, multi-generation, direction-specific.
  • Expression: tight phenotypic range.
  • Best for: production growers who want consistent results across plants.
  • Examples: well-documented breeder IBLs, classic landrace IBLs.
