Heritability in cannabis: why some traits pass down strong

Not all traits inherit equally. Some are tightly genetic, others depend on environment as much as DNA.

When a breeder selects for a trait — terpene profile, yield, finish time, color — the underlying question is: how much of this trait is genetics, and how much is environment? That ratio is called heritability. High-heritability traits respond fast to selection. Low-heritability traits resist selection no matter how hard you breed for them. Understanding the difference saves years of breeding work.

What heritability actually means

Heritability (often expressed as h²) is the proportion of trait variation in a population that's due to genetic variation rather than environmental variation. h² = 0 means the trait is purely environmental. h² = 1 means it's purely genetic. Real cannabis traits fall everywhere in between.

Leaf serration
h² ~ 0.9
Almost purely genetic
Flowering time
h² ~ 0.6-0.8
Mostly genetic
Terpene profile
h² ~ 0.4-0.7
Both
Yield
h² ~ 0.3-0.5
Environment matters a lot
Color/anthocyanin
h² ~ 0.3-0.6
Cold expression dependent
Trichome density
h² ~ 0.4-0.6
Strong environmental effect
