When a breeder selects for a trait — terpene profile, yield, finish time, color — the underlying question is: how much of this trait is genetics, and how much is environment? That ratio is called heritability. High-heritability traits respond fast to selection. Low-heritability traits resist selection no matter how hard you breed for them. Understanding the difference saves years of breeding work.

What heritability actually means

Heritability (often expressed as h²) is the proportion of trait variation in a population that's due to genetic variation rather than environmental variation. h² = 0 means the trait is purely environmental. h² = 1 means it's purely genetic. Real cannabis traits fall everywhere in between.

Flowering time — most stable lines lock this in within 3-4 generations.
Leaf morphology — number of fingers, serration depth, leaf width.
Plant structure — Christmas tree vs. bush, internode spacing.
Genetic markers — visible phenotypes like color variants when triggered.
Sex expression — hermaphroditism tendency is moderately heritable.

If you select for any of these traits, the next generation responds visibly. F2-F3 changes are usually obvious. By F5 the trait is approaching IBL-level stability.

Low-heritability traits — slow, frustrating selection

Final cannabinoid content — environment, harvest timing, and post-harvest handling swamp genetics.
Total yield — pot size, light, training, environment all dominate.
Specific terpene ratio — phenotype expression varies grow-to-grow.
Resin gland density — environment-dependent.
Anthocyanin color — partly genetic, partly cold trigger.

Selecting for these traits takes many generations and many runs. A breeder pushing for 'higher THC' over 4 generations may see modest gains, while environmental tuning could move the same number further in one cycle.

Why some traits look heritable but aren't

A clone-only's flavor isn't heritable — it's that single plant's expression. When the same flavor appears in 90% of an S1 pack, it's not because flavor was 'inherited' — it's because S1 offspring share most of the mother's homozygous traits. Selfing isn't selection; it's reproduction with sampling.

If you're trying to stabilize a low-h² trait (yield, total cannabinoid), accept it will be slow. Build the rest of the line first.

If you're scoring plants in different conditions, you're measuring environment + genetics. Score under uniform conditions.

Small pops give noisy heritability estimates. 30-50+ siblings is the minimum for serious selection.

Common misunderstandings

"This breeder's strain has 30% THC" — measured under their conditions, not yours. Heritability for total THC is moderate at best.
"All her offspring smell like she does" — the mother might be uniquely homozygous; her offspring may be too. Doesn't make the trait broadly heritable.
"This strain is impossible to make stable" — usually means the breeder is hunting a low-h² trait or selecting against vigor.
"Hybrid vigor will solve my low-yield problem" — vigor adds energy, but yield ceiling is set by genetics + environment.

How do real breeders measure heritability?+

Mostly by experience and pedigree records. Formal h² calculation requires controlled populations and statistical analysis — rare in cannabis breeding outside of academic studies.

Does heritability change across generations?+

Yes — as a line stabilizes (genetic variance shrinks), heritability appears to decline. The trait is still 'genetic'; there's just less genetic variation left to attribute to.

What's the most heritable trait in cannabis?+

Photoperiod sensitivity, leaf morphology, and finishing time. These are the easiest to lock in.
