Sessile Trichomes

Sessile trichomes are small, non-stalked glandular structures that sit flush against plant tissue surfaces, commonly observed on cannabis leaves, bracts, and stems. Unlike their larger counterparts (stalked trichomes), sessile variants lack an elevated stalk and are embedded directly into the epidermis. These structures produce and store cannabinoids and terpenes, though typically in lower concentrations than stalked varieties. Sessile trichomes are present across most cannabis cultivars and represent an important morphological trait in breeding documentation and plant anatomy studies.

Breeders monitor sessile trichome density and distribution as secondary phenotypic markers when evaluating plant structure and resin production patterns. Dense sessile trichome coverage on foliage is often recorded alongside stalked trichome metrics in formal strain lineage documentation.
