It measures the percentage of seeds that successfully sprout under standardized conditions, typically within 7-10 days in controlled humidity and temperature. High germination rates (85%+) indicate quality seed stock, stable genetics, and proper storage conditions. Breeders track this metric to assess seed vigor, predict crop uniformity, and validate preservation protocols. Poor germination can signal genetic instability, seed damage, age-related decline, or environmental stress during production.

Breeders use germination rate as a quality-control gate: seeds failing to meet minimum thresholds (usually 70%) are culled from breeding programs. Consistent germination rates across seed batches indicate stable parentage and reliable genetics for producing F1 or stabilized lines.
