Cannabinoid conversion refers to the enzymatic transformation of one cannabinoid into another during plant growth, storage, or processing. The most documented example is the decarboxylation of THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) into THC through heat exposure. Breeders and researchers also study how plants naturally convert CBGA (cannabigerolic acid) into THCA, CBDA, or CBCA through the action of specific synthase enzymes. Understanding conversion pathways helps breeders predict final cannabinoid profiles and informs cultivation and storage practices that preserve or alter target compounds.

Breeders select for or against specific synthase genes to influence whether a plant produces predominantly THCA or CBDA-dominant chemotypes. Knowledge of conversion mechanics also helps preserve cannabinoid integrity during seed storage and guides post-harvest handling protocols.
