Cannabis seeds are remarkably durable when stored correctly. Three enemies: heat, light, and moisture. Eliminate all three and the seeds remain viable for a decade or longer.

Container. Airtight glass vial, mylar bag, or original breeder packaging inside a sealed outer container. Add a desiccant pack (silica gel) to absorb residual moisture.

Temperature. 40°F (4°C) is ideal — your fridge. For multi-year storage, the freezer is acceptable IF moisture is fully controlled (any moisture + freezing = cracked seed coats = dead seeds). Most collectors fridge-store and skip the freezer hassle.

Light. Total darkness. UV degrades seed viability rapidly.

Handling after cold storage. Bring sealed container to room temperature for 24+ hours BEFORE opening — otherwise condensation forms on the cold seeds and ruins them.

Label everything. Strain, breeder, date, parents if relevant. Future-you will thank present-you.

How long do seeds stay viable?+
Properly stored: 5–10 years routinely, 15+ years for well-vacuum-sealed cold storage. Poorly stored (warm/humid/light-exposed): 6–18 months.
