Soil food web basics for cannabis growers

What's actually living in your soil, and why it matters for the plant.

A healthy soil isn't dirt — it's a living ecosystem. Bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, and arthropods cycle nutrients, suppress disease, and build structure that holds water and oxygen for roots. Understanding this changes how you feed. In soil, you feed the microbes. The microbes feed the plant.

The basic food web

  • Bacteria — the smallest and most numerous. Break down simple organics quickly. Provide ammonium and nitrates.
  • Fungi — slower but reach farther. Decompose tough organic matter (cellulose, lignin). Mycorrhizal fungi extend root reach 10-100×.
  • Protozoa — eat bacteria and excrete nitrogen the plant can use. Free nitrogen cycling.
  • Nematodes — beneficial ones consume harmful ones and recycle nutrients. Harmful ones attack roots.
  • Arthropods — mites, springtails, millipedes. Shred organic matter into smaller pieces for bacteria and fungi to finish.
