Soil food web basics for cannabis growers

What's actually living in your soil, and why it matters for the plant.

A healthy soil isn't dirt — it's a living ecosystem. Bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, and arthropods cycle nutrients, suppress disease, and build structure that holds water and oxygen for roots. Understanding this changes how you feed. In soil, you feed the microbes. The microbes feed the plant.

The basic food web

Bacteria — the smallest and most numerous. Break down simple organics quickly. Provide ammonium and nitrates.
Fungi — slower but reach farther. Decompose tough organic matter (cellulose, lignin). Mycorrhizal fungi extend root reach 10-100×.
Protozoa — eat bacteria and excrete nitrogen the plant can use. Free nitrogen cycling.
Nematodes — beneficial ones consume harmful ones and recycle nutrients. Harmful ones attack roots.
Arthropods — mites, springtails, millipedes. Shred organic matter into smaller pieces for bacteria and fungi to finish.

Building a living soil from scratch

Base mix
1/3 quality peat or coco, 1/3 compost (worm castings preferred), 1/3 aeration (perlite/pumice/rice hulls).

Mineral additions
Crustacean meal (calcium), neem cake (N + pest deterrent), kelp meal (potassium + trace), rock dust (slow-release minerals).

Microbe inoculation
Mycorrhizal inoculant at root contact, EM-1 or compost tea once a month.

Cook for 30-60 days before planting
Microbes need time to establish before the plant arrives.

Top dress, don't replant
Each cycle, top-dress compost + minerals + cover crop. The soil gets better over time.

Compost tea — useful or not?

Compost tea is aerated water + compost + microbe food, brewed for 24-48 hours to multiply microbes before applying. It works — when the tea is healthy, well-aerated, and applied within hours of brewing. Most home growers can skip this and apply regular dry amendments instead, with no measurable disadvantage.

Killing your soil — common ways

Hydrogen peroxide drenches — sterilize the soil.
Synthetic salt-heavy fertilizers — burn microbial populations.
Allowing soil to dry out completely — kills aerobic microbes.
Tilling/disrupting between cycles — destroys fungal networks.
Heat-treating soil 'to kill pests' — kills everything including beneficials.

Can I use living soil in a fabric pot?+

Yes. 15-25 gallon fabric pots are the standard. They air-prune roots and let the microbiome stay aerobic.

Do I need to add nutrients during flower?+

If your soil is well-built, no synthetic nutrients. A late-flower top-dress of bloom amendments (P/K, kelp, more compost) is plenty.

Living soil vs. organic bottle nutes — same thing?+

No. Bottle nutes feed the plant directly; living soil feeds the microbes, which feed the plant. Different mechanisms, different outcomes.
