Reading cannabis leaves: color, texture, curl, and pattern

Leaves tell you what's wrong before deficiency charts do. Here's how to listen.

A healthy cannabis leaf is matte green, lies open and relaxed, and has the classic serrated edge. Every deviation from that template tells you something specific. Generic deficiency charts only get you partway — reading the leaf in context (where on the plant, how new the growth is, what changed recently) gets you to the actual problem.

Color — what the green is telling you

Common color signals

Healthy

Medium-to-deep matte green
Uniform across the leaf surface
Slight purple tinge in stems is genetics, not stress
Veins same color as the rest of the leaf

Concerning

Pale uniform yellow on new growth = sulfur or iron
Pale uniform yellow on old growth = nitrogen mobile out
Interveinal yellow (yellow between green veins) = magnesium
Purple/red leaves with otherwise normal plant = cold or phosphorus
Very dark glossy green = nitrogen toxicity

Texture — leaves should feel soft and supple

Crispy at the tips = nutrient burn or wind burn.
Brittle and dry = under-watered or root-bound.
Soft and droopy after watering = overwatered, drainage issue, or root rot.
Sticky to the touch (mid-late flower) = normal trichome production.
Greasy or oily film = aphids or fungal infection.

Pattern matters: where on the plant

Old leaves only
The plant is moving mobile nutrients out of old growth into new growth. Mobile deficiencies (N, P, K, Mg) show up old-leaves-first.

New leaves only
The plant can't transport this nutrient. Immobile deficiencies (Ca, Fe, S, Zn) show up new-leaves-first.

Uniform across the plant
Environmental (heat, light, water, pH) or pest pressure.

Pattern is concentrated on one side
Light distribution issue, fan placement, or localized pest pocket.

Spots and lesions

Tiny white speckling on upper leaf surface — spider mites (look under leaves with a loupe).
Brown spots with yellow halos — calcium deficiency or septoria.
Powdery white patches — powdery mildew. Address immediately.
Black sooty deposits — sooty mold (usually paired with sap-sucking pests).
Bronze speckling that spreads — broad mites or russet mites. Hard to spot without 60×+ magnification.

Common mistakes when diagnosing

Adding more nutrients to a plant that's actually pH-locked-out.
Spraying pesticide for a problem that's actually heat stress.
Stressing further by changing too many things at once — fix one variable per 48-72 hours.
Pulling a healthy leaf as 'evidence' rather than photographing it in place.

Should I cut off dying leaves?+

Yellow leaves the plant is actively reabsorbing nutrients from — leave them. Fully crisp dead leaves — remove them so they don't host pests or fungus.

What's the fastest diagnostic move?+

Check pH first. 60% of 'deficiencies' are pH lockouts. Flush + re-feed at correct pH and see if it resolves.

When should I worry about a plant?+

When multiple symptoms appear within 48 hours, or when new growth is affected — both signal active, not historical, problems.
