Harvest window mistakes: cutting too early or too late

The 10-day window matters more than the 8 weeks before it.

You can do everything else perfectly and lose 20% of the harvest by chopping at the wrong moment. The harvest window — typically 7-10 days where the plant is at peak ripeness — is the single most consequential window in the grow. Most beginners chop too early. A smaller number chop too late.

The two signals: trichomes and pistils

What each signal actually tells you
Trichomes (the real signal)
  • Clear = THC still building, premature
  • Cloudy/milky = THC peak
  • Amber = THC degrading, more CBN/relaxation
  • Mix 70% cloudy / 25% milky / 5% amber = classic chop
Pistils (the rough indicator)
  • All white = nowhere near done
  • 30-50% darkened = still building
  • 70-90% darkened/curled = approach the window
  • All dark — usually past peak
