Harvest window mistakes: cutting too early or too late

The 10-day window matters more than the 8 weeks before it.

You can do everything else perfectly and lose 20% of the harvest by chopping at the wrong moment. The harvest window — typically 7-10 days where the plant is at peak ripeness — is the single most consequential window in the grow. Most beginners chop too early. A smaller number chop too late.

The two signals: trichomes and pistils

What each signal actually tells you

Trichomes (the real signal)

Clear = THC still building, premature
Cloudy/milky = THC peak
Amber = THC degrading, more CBN/relaxation
Mix 70% cloudy / 25% milky / 5% amber = classic chop

Pistils (the rough indicator)

All white = nowhere near done
30-50% darkened = still building
70-90% darkened/curled = approach the window
All dark — usually past peak

Cutting too early — what you lose

Trichomes are still building cannabinoids in the last 7-14 days. A plant chopped at 90% clear trichomes vs. 70% cloudy can have 20-30% less THC by weight and a noticeably more 'racy' or 'headachy' experience. The yield itself also continues to swell in the final days as the plant packs sugars into the flower.

Cutting too late — different problem

Past peak, trichomes degrade. THC oxidizes into CBN, which is more sedating but less potent overall. The plant also re-absorbs some pigments and the colors fade. Late harvest isn't a disaster — many growers prefer the heavy stoned experience — but it's not the same product.

Cultivar variation matters

Indica-leaning genetics often finish 7-9 weeks of flower.
Sativa-leaning genetics often need 10-13 weeks. Many growers chop too early because they expect indica timing.
Modern hybrids settle in the 8-10 week range, but breeder notes are your best guide.
Autoflowers vary widely — some finish in 8 weeks total, others 12 weeks total.

Top colas first, then lowers later
Lowers often need an extra 3-7 days to finish. Two-stage harvest captures both.

Common timing mistakes

Reading only pistils and chopping at 90% darkened — usually too early.
Reading sugar-leaf trichomes instead of bud trichomes — sugar leaves amber 1-2 weeks before buds do.
Chopping on a weekend instead of the right day.
Not staggering the lower-canopy harvest — chopping everything at once leaves the bottom underripe.

What if I have to chop early for travel/life?+

Cut just the top 1/3 at the right moment and leave the lower 2/3 to keep finishing. You'll lose less than chopping everything early.

My trichomes won't go amber — should I wait?+

Some strains never go strongly amber. If you're at 70% cloudy and the plant looks otherwise ripe, chop. Genetics vary.

Does flushing matter?+

Some growers swear by a 1-2 week flush of plain water before chop. Others see no measurable difference. Either way is fine.
