Cannabis seeds germinate best between 70–85°F (21–29°C) with consistent moisture and minimal handling. Three popular methods, all reliable when executed cleanly:

Paper towel method. Place seeds between two layers of damp (not soaking) paper towel on a plate. Cover with another plate to retain moisture. Check daily — most seeds crack open in 24–96 hours. Once the taproot is ~5mm, plant root-down into your medium ~5–10mm deep.

Direct-to-medium. Soak seeds 12–24 hours in plain water, then plant ~10mm deep in pre-moistened starter medium (peat plug, light coco, or seedling mix). Cover loosely. Most seeds emerge in 4–8 days.

24-hour pre-soak only. Soak in clean room-temp water for 18–24 hours. Plant whether they've cracked or not. Less micromanagement; slightly slower than paper towel.

Common mistakes: pouring chlorinated tap water (use dechlorinated or filtered), planting too deep, letting the medium dry out, exposing to direct light or cold drafts. Patience over poking — once you've planted, leave them alone.

My seeds aren't sprouting after a week. What now?+
Wait one more week before declaring them dead. Older or stressed seeds can take 10–14 days. Verify temperature (70–85°F), moisture (damp not wet), and that you didn't bury them too deep.
Should I scuff the seed coat?+
Generally no — modern breeder seeds don't need it. Only consider scarification for ancient or extremely hard-coated landrace seeds.
