Cannabis ruderalis is a low-THC, fast-finishing wild population from Central Asia and Eastern Europe. It triggers flowering based on age, not light cycle — and that single trait is the foundation of every modern autoflower.

The autoflower revolution

Early autoflowers from the 2000s were weak and low-yielding. Twenty years of breeding has fixed that — modern autos can compete with photoperiods on potency, terpenes, and yield. But the ruderalis is still in there.
