Reading pack variation: what wide phenos tell you about a line

Variation axes — where the differences show up

• Structure — short bushy vs. tall sativa stretch.
• Leaf shape — fat indica fingers vs. narrow sativa fingers.
• Vegetative speed — fast vs. slow growers.
• Flowering time — 8-week finisher vs. 11-week finisher.
• Terpene direction — gas vs. citrus vs. floral.
• Trichome production — frosty vs. moderate.
• Color expression — green vs. purple under cold.

A polyhybrid will vary across most or all of these axes. A tight IBL will vary across few or none.

The mathematical reason

Mendel's rules apply. In an F1 from two true-breeding parents, all offspring resemble each other (dominant alleles express). In an F2 (or in any polyhybrid), recessive alleles surface — different combinations produce different phenotypes. The more heterozygous the parents, the more combinatorial variation in the offspring.

What experienced hunters look for

   Pop the full pack

   Don't pop 4 of 10 and decide. The interesting phenotype might be in the seeds you didn't germinate.

   Track every plant from day 1

   Numbered tags, photos, notes. The cull-list is just as valuable as the keeper-list.

   Look at the extremes

   The plant that looks nothing like the others is often the most informative — even if it's not the keeper.

   Score by axis

   Don't pick a 'best plant.' Score each axis (structure, terps, finish) and pick the keeper that wins on the axes you care about most.

   Take cuttings of every survivor

   Mid-veg cuttings give you the option to re-run any plant you've kept.

When wide variation is a problem

• Production growers can't fill a tent of 8 plants all behaving differently — yield and harvest scheduling break down.
• Beginners often pick wide packs and feel overwhelmed by inconsistency.
• Hermaphroditism rates can be higher in wide packs from less-selected parents.
• Some "wide" packs are wide because the breeder didn't do the selection work, not because they offered a hunt pack on purpose.

What tight variation tells you about a breeder

A breeder who consistently delivers tight packs has invested multi-generation selection work. They've selected for the same traits over enough generations to lock them in. That's expensive in time and tent space. It also limits hunt potential — but for buyers who want what's on the package, tight is gold.

Common misreadings

• "This pack is bad because the plants look different" — might be a deliberate hunt pack.
• "This pack is great because all plants look identical" — might be stable but underwhelming.
• "My pack matches the breeder's description perfectly" — might be one phenotype out of 10 you popped, not the whole pack's signature.
• "Wide variation means weak genetics" — wrong. It often means heterozygous parents and high hunt potential.
