True breeding stock refers to cannabis plants that consistently produce offspring matching parental phenotypes across multiple generations when self-pollinated or crossed within the line. Breeders develop true breeding lines by selecting for stable trait expression—morphology, flowering time, cannabinoid ratios, or terpene profiles—then stabilizing those traits through repeated backcrossing and selection cycles, typically 6+ generations. These lines serve as the genetic foundation for commercial cultivars and breeding programs, reducing unpredictability in the next generation. True breeding status is documented through phenotypic observation and increasingly through genetic marker testing. Establishing true breeding stock requires significant time investment but produces reliable parental material for hybrid development.

Breeders use established true breeding lines as foundation parents (P1, P2) to create F1 hybrids with predictable heterosis traits. Maintaining multiple true breeding lines allows breeders to control specific characteristics—yield, cannabinoid content, or disease resistance—and replicate results across production cycles.
