Monoterpenes are the smallest and most volatile terpene molecules found in cannabis and many plants. They consist of two isoprene units (C10H16) and are responsible for much of the initial aroma and flavor profile in fresh cannabis flower. Common monoterpenes in cannabis include limonene, pinene, myrcene, and terpinolene. These compounds evaporate readily, especially when cannabis is dried or heated, making them important markers of cure quality and storage conditions. Monoterpenes are frequently isolated for aroma profiling and cannabinoid interaction studies in breeding research.

Breeders track monoterpene ratios across lineages to predict terpene stability and expression consistency. Monoterpene-dominant phenotypes often correlate with specific parent genetics and growing conditions, making them useful markers in early selection and strain documentation.
