Stretch behavior refers to the vertical growth pattern cannabis plants exhibit during early flowering, when internodal spacing increases rapidly before flower development begins. This trait is influenced by genetics, light spectrum, photoperiod, and environmental stress responses. Sativa-dominant and equatorial landraces typically display pronounced stretch, while indica-dominant and high-latitude cultivars often show minimal elongation. Understanding stretch behavior is critical for indoor cultivation planning, canopy management, and selecting appropriate genotypes for specific grow spaces. Breeders document stretch ratios (final height relative to vegetative height) as a key trait in strain descriptions to help growers match genetics to their environment.

Commercial breeders and cultivators select for either low-stretch or high-stretch phenotypes depending on grow methodology—compact cultivars for space efficiency, taller phenotypes for larger facilities.
