Sex expression control refers to the genetic and environmental mechanisms that determine whether a cannabis plant develops male, female, or hermaphroditic characteristics. In dioecious cannabis populations, sex determination involves chromosomal factors (likely XY-type systems) influenced by nuclear and cytoplasmic genetic components. Environmental stressors—including light duration, temperature fluctuations, and nutrient imbalances—can trigger phenotypic sex reversals or intersex expression even in genetically female or male plants. Understanding sex expression is foundational to breeding programs, as it directly impacts seed production strategies, breeding stock stability, and the consistency of propagation methods across generations.

Breeders select for stable sex expression to maintain reliable male and female lines for controlled crosses.
