Phenotypic fixing refers to the selective breeding process by which cultivators stabilize desired observable traits across multiple generations of cannabis plants. Rather than selecting for genetics alone, breeders identify plants expressing consistent morphology, structure, flowering time, and terpene profiles, then breed them together to reinforce these characteristics. This practice is foundational to modern strain development, allowing breeders to move beyond F1 hybrids toward stable, reproducible lines. Phenotypic fixing typically requires 4–8+ generations of careful selection and culling to achieve reliable expression across a population. Success depends on identifying which traits breed true versus those requiring continued selection pressure.
