Linebreeding

Linebreeding is a controlled breeding technique where genetically related plants are crossed to concentrate desired traits within a population. Breeders working in this category intentionally select parents that share common ancestry, thereby increasing homozygosity for target characteristics such as flavor, resin production, or plant structure. This strategy differs from outcrossing and is often employed after initial hybridization to stabilize and intensify phenotypic expression. Linebreeding carries risks: reduced genetic diversity can amplify undesirable recessive traits and may lower overall vigor. Cannabis breeders frequently report using linebreeding over 3–6+ generations to establish stable IBL (inbred line) foundations or preserve elite genetics within a family.

Linebreeding is essential for stabilizing cannabis cultivars and creating predictable, true-breeding lines. Breeders employ this method to fix desirable alleles and reduce phenotypic variation, enabling consistent seed production and commercial or preservation-focused cultivation programs.
