Isomenthol

Isomenthol is a minor monoterpene found in cannabis and other plants, structurally related to menthol but with a different spatial arrangement of atoms. In cannabis breeding records, isomenthol appears inconsistently across cultivars and is often difficult to isolate as a primary aroma compound due to its typically low concentrations. Breeders tracking full terpene profiles may encounter isomenthol as part of the minor monoterpene suite, particularly in strains selected for cooling or herbal sensory properties. Its presence is rarely a primary selection criterion compared to major terpenes like limonene or myrcene, but detailed chromatographic analysis frequently identifies it in diverse genetic backgrounds.

Isomenthol's low abundance makes it challenging to breed for as a distinctive marker. Breeders targeting minty or herbal aromatic profiles sometimes observe isomenthol co-occurring with menthol or eucalyptol, though deliberate selection for this single compound remains uncommon in documented breeding programs.
