Hermaphroditism expression refers to the development of both male (stamen-bearing) and female (pistil-bearing) reproductive structures on individual cannabis plants. This trait occurs naturally in cannabis and can be triggered or exacerbated by environmental stress, genetics, or breeding decisions. Breeders and cultivators distinguish between genetic predisposition to hermaphroditism and environmentally induced expression, as the triggers and heritability differ significantly. Understanding this phenomenon is essential for seed production, breeding program stability, and cultivation planning. The trait exists on a spectrum; some plants show occasional male flowers while others develop comprehensive male organs.

Breeders actively select against strong hermaphroditism tendencies in commercial cultivars to ensure reliable female-only crop production. Conversely, some breeders intentionally cross hermaphroditic plants or use controlled stress methods in breeding programs to identify and stabilize stable female lines or to understand underlying genetic architecture.
