The Frosty Phenotype describes cannabis plants exhibiting dense, crystalline trichome coverage that creates a white or silvery visual appearance on flowers and leaves. This trait results from high concentration of glandular trichomes—the resin-producing structures—rather than from mold or environmental stress. Frosty phenotypes are commonly observed across Indica-dominant and hybrid lineages, though the genetic basis for extreme trichome density varies among cultivars. Breeders have selectively worked with lines showing this trait for decades, as trichome-heavy plants often correlate with robust resin production. The trait is purely visual and structural; it does not directly indicate cannabinoid or terpene content, potency, or any physiological effect.

Frosty phenotypes appeal to breeders pursuing high-resin-yield cultivars, as visible trichome density can serve as a selection marker during phenotype hunting. However, breeders distinguish between cosmetic frostiness and actual cannabinoid accumulation, requiring chemical testing to confirm resin quality beyond appearance.
