Disease tolerance describes a plant's genetic capacity to withstand or resist fungal, bacterial, and viral pathogens without necessarily eliminating the pathogen entirely. In cannabis breeding, disease tolerance is a critical trait influenced by multiple genetic loci and environmental factors. Breeders working in this category often select parent plants that demonstrate resilience to powdery mildew, botrytis, root rot, and other common cultivation challenges. Unlike true immunity, tolerance allows the plant to maintain vigor and productivity even when pathogen pressure is present. This trait family is increasingly documented in modern breeding programs, particularly among cultivators operating in humid or challenging climates.

Breeders incorporate disease-tolerant genetics by crossing individuals that survive or recover from pathogen exposure, then selecting offspring showing reduced symptom expression across generations. Disease tolerance breeding is essential for developing cultivars suited to outdoor, greenhouse, and high-humidity indoor environments where pathogenic pressure is difficult to control.
