Cultivar crosses represent intentional breeding between two or more selected cannabis varieties, forming the foundation of modern cannabis genetics. Breeders combine parent lines to express desired traits—structure, aroma profile, growth pattern, or cannabinoid ratios—while managing undesirable characteristics through selective pairing. These crosses are documented by lineage records that track parentage and phenotypic outcomes across generations. The resulting offspring may stabilize into new named cultivars or remain as F1 hybrids with heterozygous traits. Cultivar crosses differ from open pollination or accidental hybridization in their deliberate design and record-keeping, making them central to both commercial breeding programs and preservation efforts.

Breeders use cultivar crosses to combine complementary genetics—pairing vigor from one parent with terpene expression from another, or combining disease-resistance traits with desired plant structure.
