Crystal Coating

Crystal Coating refers to the dense accumulation of trichomes—particularly glandular trichomes with prominent resin heads—that create a visibly crystalline or frosty appearance on cannabis flowers and leaves. This trait develops as plants mature and is influenced by genetics, light exposure, and growing conditions. The coating consists primarily of cannabinoid and terpene-rich resin produced in the trichome heads, not actual ice crystals. Breeders have long selected for visually prominent trichome production as a marker of resin density, though visual appearance alone does not indicate cannabinoid or terpene potency. The Crystal Coating phenotype is common across many modern cultivars and has become a recognized visual characteristic in breeding selection.

Breeders often use crystal density as a selection criterion when developing new lines, as heavy trichome production typically correlates with higher resin yield. This trait is particularly valued in cultivars bred for concentrate production, where resin volume directly impacts processing efficiency and final product weight.
