Chlorophyll Notes refer to the green, plant-matter aroma and flavor compounds directly associated with active photosynthetic tissue in cannabis. Unlike cured flower, which develops secondary aromas through oxidation and terpene breakdown, chlorophyll-dominant profiles emerge from fresh or inadequately dried material, or from certain genetic lineages that express grassy, herbaceous terpene combinations even after proper cure. Breeders occasionally isolate and stabilize these profiles deliberately, particularly in cultivars selected for extraction or hash production where green-plant character is valued. The intensity and character of chlorophyll notes are influenced by harvest timing, post-harvest handling, and specific monoterpene and sesquiterpene expression patterns.

Breeders working with chlorophyll-forward genetics often select for lineages expressing high levels of hexanal, hexenal, and other C6 volatile compounds that create fresh, grassy notes. These profiles are sometimes targeted in medical-oriented breeding programs and cultivars developed for solvent-based extraction, where green-plant character can remain stable in final products.
