Rather than focusing solely on total potency, profiling examines the full spectrum of secondary and trace cannabinoids present in dried flower and extracts. This approach emerged as cannabis genetics became more diverse and consumers and breeders sought plants with distinct cannabinoid signatures beyond THC dominance. Lineage records and laboratory testing have made cannabinoid profiling a standard breeding reference tool. Understanding a strain's cannabinoid profile is critical for reproducibility in seed production and for matching cultivars to specific breeding objectives.

Breeders use cannabinoid profiling to stabilize desired compound ratios across generations, develop novel high-CBD or balanced THC:CBD lines, and document genetic stability in offspring.
