Trichome Stalk Length

Trichome stalk length refers to the height of the cellular column supporting the head (glandular tip) of a cannabis trichome. This measurement, typically ranging from 50–300 micrometers, influences cannabinoid and terpene production efficiency and affects how readily compounds are extracted or degraded during handling and drying. Breeders classify plants by predominant stalk morphologies—short-stalked, medium-stalked, or long-stalked—as these traits correlate with trichome density, resin protection, and secondary metabolite concentration. Stalk length is heritable and varies significantly across chemotype lineages, making it a useful phenotypic marker in breeding programs focused on resin quality and processing suitability.

Short-stalked trichomes are often favored in breeding for hash and concentrate production, as they resist mechanical separation and retain compounds better during agitation. Long-stalked varieties interest breeders working on fresh-material processing and dried-flower applications, where easier extraction and visual trichome preservation matter.
