Photoperiodic Plants

Photoperiodic cannabis plants are those whose flowering is triggered by changes in day length rather than age or internal maturation. These varieties require a shift to shorter day periods (typically 12 hours or less of uninterrupted darkness) to initiate and complete the flowering cycle. Most traditional cannabis landraces and modern photoperiodic cultivars are classified as short-day plants, flowering as nights lengthen in late summer or autumn. This dependency on light cycles makes them the standard for outdoor cultivation in temperate zones and requires careful light management in controlled indoor environments. Photoperiodic plants contrast with autoflowering varieties, which flower based on age regardless of photoperiod.

Breeders maintain photoperiodic genetics as the foundation of most modern cannabis cultivars, valuing the extended vegetative window for selective phenotype work and mother plant development. The predictable flowering trigger allows controlled crosses and stabilization of desired traits across multiple generations before flowering is induced.
