Mildew Resistance

Mildew resistance refers to a cannabis plant's inherent ability to withstand or tolerate fungal pathogens—particularly powdery mildew and downy mildew—without developing widespread infection. This trait is polygenic, meaning multiple genes contribute to the plant's defensive capacity. Resistance levels vary considerably across cultivars and are influenced by environmental conditions, humidity, air circulation, and plant density. Breeders working in humid climates or indoor operations have increasingly prioritized mildew-resistant genetics to reduce crop loss and minimize fungicide dependency. Lineage records frequently report mildew tolerance in landrace strains adapted to damp regions, including certain Hindu Kush and mountain-derived cultivars.

Cannabis breeders select for mildew resistance by crossing known tolerant parents and evaluating offspring under controlled high-humidity conditions. Stabilizing resistance traits typically requires multiple generations of selection, and many modern cultivars marketed for outdoor or sealed-environment production incorporate these genetics into their breeding programs.
