Feminized Seed

Feminized seeds are cannabis seeds bred to produce only female plants, eliminating the male chromosome through selective breeding or chemical treatment during seed production. Breeders developed this technology to increase cultivation efficiency by removing the need to identify and cull male plants during growth. Feminized seeds became commercially available in the 1990s and are now standard in most cannabis breeding programs. The process typically involves stress-inducing a female plant to produce pollen containing only female chromosomes, which is then used to pollinate another female plant. This creates seeds with dramatically reduced probability of producing male plants—commonly reported at 99%+ female ratios, though occasional hermaphrodites can occur depending on breeding practices and environmental stress during cultivation.

Feminized seed technology allows breeders to focus genetic work on female plant traits without dedicating grow space to males.
