Capitate Stalked Trichomes

Capitate stalked trichomes are glandular structures featuring a distinct stalk (or peduncle) topped by a round, bulbous head (or capitate dome). These multicellular trichomes are among the largest visible to the naked eye and commonly associated with cannabinoid and terpene production in Cannabis. Found predominantly on flower bracts, leaves, and stems, capitate stalked trichomes develop as plants mature through flowering. Their size and visibility make them a practical morphological marker for breeders assessing resin production potential. The density and distribution of capitate stalked trichomes vary significantly across cultivars and are influenced by both genetics and environmental conditions during growth.

Breeders frequently select for capitate stalked trichome density as a visual indicator of metabolite accumulation, though trichome presence alone does not predict cannabinoid or terpene ratios. These structures serve as a heritable trait in lineage development, with selective breeding producing cultivars displaying variable trichome coverage patterns.
