Soil Funk
Soil Funk describes a distinctive earthy aroma profile commonly associated with cannabis strains carrying dominant terpenes like myrcene and geosmin. This aroma classification reflects characteristics often described as musty, loamy, or petrichor-like—reminiscent of wet soil or forest floor. Lineage records frequently report Soil Funk notes in older landraces and strains derived from Old World cultivars, particularly those with extended exposure to humid growing environments. The profile is often linked to microbial activity during curing and storage, though terpene expression during flowering also contributes significantly. Breeders working with heritage genetics and outdoor-adapted lines commonly encounter this aroma signature.

Cannabis breeders preserve or breed away from Soil Funk depending on cultivar goals. Strains deliberately selected for earthy, complex profiles may retain this trait through parent selection, while commercial cultivars often cross to minimize it in favor of fruity or floral terpene dominance.
