A working framework for reading parentage claims — what's credible, what's vague, what's marketing.

Every seed pack tells you something about its parents. Some packs tell you a lot — names, generations, selection notes, even hunt-size data. Others say almost nothing. As a collector, your job is to read those claims well enough to know what you're actually buying.

The five questions to ask a claim

Who's the mother and who's the father?
If the breeder can't tell you which is which, the cross was casual — not selected.

What generation is this seed?
F1 / F2 / BX1 / S1 / IBL each tell you different things about expected variation.

What was selected for?
"We hunted for the gas-leaning phenotype" is a real answer. "It's fire" is not.

How many seeds were popped to find the breeders?
Hunt size of 100+ from a polyhybrid suggests serious selection. 10 from an F1 suggests pollen chuck.

Where did the parent stock come from?
Credible breeders trace their cuts. Vague "my source" answers are red flags.

Red flags worth pausing on

Claims to be the "true" cut of a famous clone-only with no chain of custody.
Parents listed as "mystery" or "unknown" on a $200 pack.
Generation labeled in marketing-speak ("selected line") instead of breeding-speak (F4, S1).
Breeder has no other releases or has multiple identities.
Lineage contradicted by another credible breeder, with no resolution provided.
Photos overshadow data — gorgeous bag shots, zero parentage.

Verified: confirmed by the originating breeder or independently traceable through cut history.

Common evaluation mistakes

Trusting the bag shot. Pretty buds and credible genetics are different things.
Trusting the price. Expensive doesn't mean documented.
Trusting the brand. New brand names appear constantly; the work record is what matters.
Trusting the hype. Twitter threads age poorly; lineage pages don't.

What if a breeder is honest but the parents are themselves unverified?+

That's reported lineage. Still useful information — just don't treat it as breeder-confirmed.

Is older always better?+

No. Some clone-only cuts from the 90s are mythologized beyond their actual quality. Read what people actually grew, not the legend.

What about lineage that disagrees across two breeders?+

If both are credible, neither is necessarily lying — they may be working from different sources of the same name. CannaForge labels this as 'disputed' and shows both readings.
